Our business is highly profitable and stable, but our leadership team has lost its edge. Our Level 10 Meetings feel flat, and there is no real urgency to solve issues because everyone is comfortable. How do we inject healthy pressure back into the team to get them focused on growth again?

Complacency is the silent killer of successful businesses. When a company is profitable, leaders often stop pushing themselves because there is no immediate crisis to solve. To inject urgency, you must raise the bar and hold your team accountable to higher standards.

Start by updating your V/TO. If your current goals are too easy to reach, you need a bigger, more challenging 10-Year Target and a more aggressive 3-Year Picture. Force your leadership team to look at where the industry is going, particularly with advancements in automation and AI. If you are not actively modernizing your operations, your competitors will eventually pass you.

Next, look at your Scorecard. If all your weekly measurables are consistently green, your targets are likely too low. Raise the targets to a level that requires your team to innovate rather than just maintain. When a metric turns red, it forces the team to use the IDS process to find a solution.

Finally, evaluate whether you have the right people in the seats. Sometimes, leaders become comfortable because they have checked out mentally. You need hungry leaders who are excited by growth and challenge. If a leader prefers a slow, maintenance style pace, they may no longer fit the vision of a growing, exit-ready company.
