After implementing EOS® and hitting our initial growth targets, our leadership team has settled into a comfortable routine, and we are no longer pushing for aggressive improvements or adopting new technologies like AI. How do we shake our leadership team out of this mid-level complacency and reignite their drive to scale the business?
Complacency is the natural state of a leadership team that has worked hard to achieve stability. Once the chaos of the early days is gone and the business is running smoothly, your leaders will naturally protect their comfort zones. To shake them out of this complacency, you must raise the bar and paint a new, challenging picture of the future.
Start with your V/TO®. Revisit your ten-year target and three-year picture during your next quarterly offsite. If these targets no longer excite or challenge the team, they need to be rewritten. Show them that stability is not the end goal; it is merely the foundation for our next phase of growth.
Next, look at your Accountability Chart and raise the standards of performance. Introduce new, aggressive goals that require modern tools like AI and automated operations to achieve. If your current Scorecard metrics are easy to hit, change them. Make your metrics more forward-looking and challenging.
Introduce healthy pressure by asking hard questions during your Level 10 Meeting™. When your leaders bring up comfortable, safe Rocks, push them to think bigger. Challenge them to automate repetitive tasks and find ways to double their department's output without doubling their headcount.
Ultimately, leadership team health requires constant renewal. If a team member is unwilling or unable to embrace this new level of performance, you may need to evaluate if they still GWC™ their seat for the next stage of your journey. Complacency is a choice, and as the owner, you set the pace.
