We struggle to keep our short-term issues list from becoming a parking lot for massive, multi-departmental projects that actually require a dedicated quarterly focus. How do we filter these out of our weekly Level 10 Meeting™?
Your weekly Level 10 Meeting™ is designed to be purely tactical, focusing on the immediate ninety-day horizon to keep operations running smoothly. When long-term strategic topics or V/TO® discussions creep into your weekly meeting, they hijack your time and stall weekly progress.
To maintain this boundary, the facilitator must act as a strict gatekeeper. If an issue arises during IDS® that cannot be solved with a quick, weekly action step, or if it requires a major strategic pivot, it does not belong in this meeting.
When the team begins debating a long-term strategic topic, the facilitator must intervene immediately.
Instruct the scribe to move the item from the short-term issues list to the Long-Term Issues List, which is parked for your next quarterly alignment session.
Explain to the team:
- This is a strategic topic that requires deep focus. We are parking this on our Long-Term Issues List to solve at our next quarterly meeting.
This practice, as detailed in Gino Wickman's six compartments framework, ensures your weekly meeting remains focused on execution, while your strategic vision is protected for the appropriate quarterly forum.
