Our weekly short-term Issues List is clogged with strategic opportunities that require deep business planning, leaving us no time for the urgent weekly fires. How do we keep these two types of issues separate without losing track of our long-term goals?
It is common for leadership teams to allow long term, strategic opportunities to clog their weekly short term Issues List. When you mix strategic ideas with urgent weekly problems, your Level 10 Meeting stalls. You end up having superficial debates about massive business shifts, leaving you with zero time to solve the urgent operational issues holding you back today.
To solve this, you must strictly implement the six compartments of your business, specifically separating your short term Issues List from your long term Issues List.
The weekly Level 10 Meeting is only for short term issues: problems that must be solved this quarter. If an issue is an opportunity, a creative idea, or a strategic shift that does not impact your current quarterly Rocks, it is a long term issue.
The facilitator must ruthlessly move these long term ideas off the weekly list and onto the V/TO long term Issues List. This long term list is parked and ignored until your quarterly planning session, where you have the time and headspace to address it fully.
By maintaining a clear boundary between these two compartments, you keep your weekly meeting fast, tactical, and execution focused. You protect your team's energy so they can solve immediate issues while ensuring your strategic goals are safely preserved for the right time.
