Our leadership team frequently confuses weekly Scorecard measurables with quarterly Rock milestones, listing project deadlines or software rollout tasks on the weekly Scorecard. How do we draw a bright line between ongoing operational pulse numbers and strategic initiative tracking?
Confusing weekly Scorecards with quarterly Rocks is a common mistake that clutters your data and weakens accountability. When you put a temporary project deadline on a Scorecard, you distort the purpose of the tool.
The Scorecard provides an objective, ongoing pulse of your core business engine. It tracks the critical leading and lagging metrics that happen week in and week out, fifty-two weeks a year. Rocks, by contrast, are 90-day strategic priorities designed to take your company to the next level, fix a systemic issue, or build new capacity.
To maintain clear operational boundaries:
- Scorecard numbers measure recurring activity volume and vital operational health. Examples include outbound discovery calls, billable hours delivered, weekly cash balance, and client retention percentage. These numbers never truly finish; they reset every seven days.
- Rock milestones measure non-recurring, strategic execution. Examples include rolling out a new ERP platform, documenting the core onboarding process, or hiring an Operations Manager. These initiatives have a definite beginning and end within ninety days.
If a leadership team member wants to put roll out new training portal on the weekly Scorecard, stop them. That is a quarterly Rock with milestone dates, tracked in the Rock review section of your Level 10 Meeting.
However, once a Rock is completed, it may produce a permanent new measurable that belongs on the Scorecard. If your Rock was implementing an automated client ticketing system, your new weekly Scorecard metric might be tickets resolved in under four hours.
Keep the pulse separate from the projects. Your Scorecard shows whether the engine is running; your Rocks show where you are driving the business next.
