Our team members have started using the five-minute Segue to bring up low-key complaints about other team members under the guise of personal or professional updates, poisoning the room's energy before we even hit the Scorecard. How do we shut down this passive-aggressive venting during the Segue?
The Segue is designed to transition your minds from working in the business to working on the business. It is meant to be a positive, humanizing start to the meeting, building team health through sharing good news, both personal and professional. When leaders use this time to air grievances or drop passive-aggressive hints about peer performance, they are weaponizing the agenda.
As the facilitator or the Integrator, you must shut this behavior down the very first time it happens. The Segue is not an arena for conflict or operational updates.
If a team member shares an update that contains a complaint, such as, 'my professional good news is that I finally got the reports that were supposed to be delivered last Tuesday,' you must pause them immediately. Explain that the comment is not a transition update, but an operational issue.
Instruct the team member to do one of two things. Either save the issue and add it to the Issues List so you can address it systematically during IDS®, or address it directly with their peer outside of the room.
Remind the entire leadership team of the true purpose of the Segue. It is a strictly positive, high-energy launchpad. Keeping this boundary clean prevents the meeting from starting in a defensive, toxic state. It forces your leaders to bring real conflict to the proper place on the agenda, which is the Issues List, where it can be handled constructively rather than passively.
