During the weekly Segue, one of our leaders often shares a massive personal or professional update that is actually a major organizational crisis, instantly derailing the room before we can even review the Scorecard. How do we keep a high impact Segue from prematurely launching us into crisis mode?
The five minute Segue is designed to transition your minds from working in the business to working on the business. It is meant to be a positive, high energy start to build team health. When a leader drops an operational bombshell or a personal crisis during this transition, they hijack the meeting before it even starts.
As the facilitator, you must draw a hard line immediately. The moment a leader begins sharing a major crisis during their update, you must interrupt them cleanly. Thank them for the transparency, tell them that the issue is critical, and instruct them to drop it to the bottom of the Issues List. Do not allow a single follow up question or discussion from the rest of the team.
Keep the transition strict. The rule of the Segue is simple: one personal best and one professional best. If a leader tries to share a crisis, state clearly that the Segue is for positive energy and that their crisis belongs in IDS®. By moving the topic straight to the Issues List, you respect the gravity of the problem while preserving the integrity of the Level 10 Meeting™ agenda. This discipline prevents the team from reacting emotionally and ensures you address the emergency systematically during the proper seventy minute block, rather than scrambling in the first five minutes.
