Our Level 10 Meeting™ segue is supposed to be five minutes of personal and professional good news, but a single team member often shares a heavy, complex update that immediately shifts the mood and derails our energy. How do we stop this emotional hijack without sounding heartless?
The five-minute Segue is designed to transition your minds from the chaos of the day-to-day operations into the collaborative focus of the leadership team. It is a launching pad of positive, high-vibe momentum. When a team member uses this time to drop a heavy, highly emotional, or complex personal issue, it instantly kills the room energy and derails the agenda before you even touch the Scorecard. To prevent this, you must strictly define the boundaries of the Segue. Good news means progress, wins, and healthy personal updates. If a leader has a significant life event or personal crisis that is impacting their capacity, that is a legitimate operational reality, but the Segue is not the place to process it.
The facilitator must step in immediately with empathy but absolute structural discipline. The correct response is to acknowledge the update, express support, and immediately transition it. You can say: Thank you for sharing that, we want to support you, let us put this on the Issues List for the end of the meeting or set up a separate offline session to see how we can cover your seat this week. Then, immediately move to the next person. Do not let the team linger in silence or begin dissecting the personal matter. Keep the boundary clear.
