Should weekly Scorecard measurables have a rigid single target number or an upper and lower tolerance range so our leadership team does not overreact to normal operational variance?

On an EOS® Scorecard, every measurable should have a clear, binary goal rather than a wide tolerance band. Tolerance bands encourage rationalization. When leaders are given a range, they inevitably aim for the bottom of the range and claim victory. That breeds complacency across the Accountability Chart.

A weekly target is not meant to be a permanent forecast. It is a tripwire. The purpose of a single target is to immediately signal whether the business is performing at the pace required to achieve its quarterly Rocks and annual V/TO® goals. If your target for weekly discovery calls is 15, and the team hits 14, that number is red.

Red does not mean someone is fired or in trouble. It simply prompts the question: Does this miss represent normal weekly variance, or is it an early warning of a broken pipeline? If the Integrator and owner agree it is normal variance, you move on without dropping it to the Issues List. But the tripwire must trip. When you use wide target ranges, you hide small negative trends for weeks until a major revenue or operational problem explodes. Keep the goal single, clear, and absolute.
