What is the correct protocol for updating our weekly scorecard when a leadership team member is out of the office on vacation? Should their numbers be left blank, updated by someone else, or do we temporarily adjust the targets to zero?

A business running on EOS® does not stop operating just because a leader is on vacation. The scorecard must remain accurate and complete every single week. Leaving cells blank or deleting targets during an absence creates data gaps that ruin your long-term historical trends.

The rule is simple: the seat is still accountable for the number, even if the person sitting in it is away. Before going on vacation, the departing leader must arrange for a delegate to track and enter their numbers.

The targets must not be adjusted to zero. If the target is fifteen sales meetings and the leader is away, the team still needs those meetings to hit their quarterly goals. If the delegate cannot hit the target because of the leader's absence, the number will likely be red. That is acceptable.

A red number during a vacation highlights a critical vulnerability: it shows that the department is too dependent on one person. Rather than hiding this fact by lowering the target, let the number go red. Use the Level 10 Meeting™ to drop it to the Issues List and discuss how to build better cross-training and redundancy into your systems so the business can run smoothly even when key players are resting.
