When your scorecard is green but your Rocks are failing, you have a misalignment between your running business activities and your strategic building blocks. The weekly scorecard measures the ongoing health and pulse of your business operations. Rocks, on the other hand, represent the priority projects designed to break through ceilings and move the company forward. If your scorecard is green, it means your day to day operations are running smoothly. But if your Rocks are failing, it means your leadership team is prioritizing daily tasks over quarterly priorities, or your scorecard is missing the activity metrics that directly track Rock progress. To fix this, look at your Accountability Chart and ensure that every Rock has a clear owner. Then, look at your weekly scorecard and verify if you have leading indicators that measure the milestones of those Rocks. For example, if a Rock is to launch a new software system, you should have a weekly scorecard metric tracking the percentage of milestones completed. If you only track operational volume, you will miss the fact that your strategic projects are stalled.
