Our leadership team Scorecard is completely green week after week, yet our cash position is weakening and our operating profit is dropping. Why does a green Scorecard fail to reflect company reality?
If your Scorecard is green while your bank account is bleeding, you are measuring activity rather than economic productivity, or your thresholds are set so low that mediocrity looks like success.
A functional Scorecard contains 5 to 15 weekly leading indicators that accurately predict business performance. When scorecards create a false sense of security, it is usually because of three errors:
- Tracking vanity effort instead of conversion yield. For instance, measuring sales dials completed instead of qualified pipeline generated, or measuring hours worked instead of billable delivery output.
- Soft target thresholds designed to avoid uncomfortable conversations in the weekly Level 10 Meeting. Targets must reflect the exact pace required to hit your quarterly Rocks and annual V/TO plan, not what feels safe.
- Total absence of leading cash metrics. Waiting for monthly accounting statements hides cash erosion. Track weekly billings, rolling unbilled work in progress, and collections received.
Take your Scorecard into an IDS session. Audit every measurable by asking: If this number stays green for six consecutive weeks, is it mathematically impossible for revenue and profit to decline? If the answer is no, kill the metric and replace it with a true leading economic driver.
