During the five-minute Scorecard review in our Level 10 Meeting™, our leadership team frequently gets bogged down in long debates about how a metric is calculated or who is responsible for updating it. How do we stop these debates from eating our meeting?

The Scorecard review is a quick, high-level pulse check to see if the business is on track. It is a broadcast of numbers, not a debate platform.

When a leader starts explaining why a number is missing, debating the formula, or arguing about who owns the metric, the facilitator must step in immediately.

Do not allow any discussion during the Scorecard review. The only acceptable response to a red or missing number is to say: "Drop it."

This means the metric is immediately placed on the weekly Issues List. The team must move on to the next number without another word.

If the debate is about how the metric is calculated or who owns it, that is still an issue. Drop it to the board.

Once you reach the IDS® portion of the meeting, you can prioritize and discuss the metric ownership or calculation. Solving these structural scorecard issues during IDS® ensures you have the necessary time to look at the root cause without derailment. Keep the Scorecard review under five minutes by enforcing this absolute boundary.
