I feel like my business is running smoothly, but our weekly Scorecard metrics are showing yellow or red across several departments. Should I trust my gut intuition as the owner, or should I rely entirely on what the Scorecard data is telling me?
As an entrepreneurial owner, your gut feeling is a powerful asset that got the business to where it is today. However, gut feeling is subjective, emotional, and prone to blind spots. When your intuition conflicts with your weekly Scorecard, the data is almost always right.
If your Scorecard is showing yellow or red while you feel everything is fine, you are likely experiencing a temporary calm before a storm. Lagging indicators like sales volume might look great today because of work done three months ago, but red leading indicators in marketing or client onboarding are warning you of a future drop.
Do not ignore the warning signs. Use your Level 10 Meeting™ to drop these red metrics down to your Issues List and IDS® them. Ask your team if the targets are realistic, if the data is accurate, or if there is a systemic roadblock.
If you dig into the red metrics and find that the business is genuinely healthy and profitable, then your metrics are wrong, not your gut. Use this as an opportunity to refine your Scorecard. Your ultimate goal is to align your intuition with objective data so your Scorecard becomes a reliable early warning system.
