When a Scorecard metric is missed, the owner of that metric often blames a system or another department instead of owning the miss. How do we handle this blame during the Level 10 Meeting?
When a Scorecard metric is missed, the owner's immediate reaction is often to point fingers or blame external circumstances. This defensive behavior destroys the trust required to run a high-performing business. During the Level 10 Meeting™, the rule is that when a number is red, the owner simply says "off track." If there is a quick fix, they state it. If not, the number is dropped to the Issues List. Once the issue is raised in IDS®, the facilitator must keep the focus entirely on ownership. If a leader blames a system or another department, remind them that they own the seat on the Accountability Chart responsible for that number. If they rely on another team member to hit their metric, it is their job to collaborate and solve that operational bottleneck outside the meeting. Do not allow the debate to become a trial where the leader defends themselves. The goal is to solve the issue so the number returns to green next week, not to assign blame. True accountability means owning the result, regardless of the hurdles.
