Our Sales seat and Finance seat are constantly fighting over who owns client pricing and custom contract discounts on the Accountability Chart. Where should the pricing accountability seat live to protect both growth and gross margin?

When Sales and Finance fight over pricing and contract discounts, it indicates a structural flaw on the Accountability Chart. Sales exists to generate revenue and win customers. Finance exists to safeguard assets, maintain compliance, and protect gross margin. Giving either department unchecked control over pricing creates severe operational dysfunction.

To resolve this conflict cleanly, divide the pricing accountability into standard pricing strategy versus exception discounting authority. Standard pricing models, profit margin baselines, and financial underwriting rules belong in the Finance seat. Finance has the analytical discipline to determine cost structures, overhead burden, and minimum viable margin. Sales cannot own margin modeling because their incentives skew heavily toward deal velocity and top-line volume.

Conversely, the Sales seat must own deal execution within the approved pricing framework. The sales team needs pre-approved discount bands and deal boundaries so they can negotiate quickly without asking for permission on every quote.

The exception boundary must be explicitly defined in the five roles of each seat on the Accountability Chart. For example, the Sales Director seat gets the role of driving revenue and managing deal negotiation within approved margin boundaries. The Finance seat gets the role of establishing pricing architecture, gross margin modeling, and contract compliance.

When a deal requires pricing outside the standard boundary, the Accountability Chart dictates that the exception escalates to the Integrator seat, not a backchannel brawl between Sales and Finance. The Integrator balances growth goals against bottom-line profitability to make the final call.
