What specific rules of engagement do you enforce inside the session room to keep leadership conversations candid, productive, and focused?
Productive strategic work requires an environment stripped of corporate posturing, digital distraction, and operational denial. To ensure that every eight-hour session delivers measurable value, I enforce strict rules of engagement the moment you walk through the door.
First, the session room is device-free. All smartphones, tablets, and laptops are turned off or kept on silent out of reach. If an executive is checking email or Slack, they are mentally managing the current fire rather than working on the business. Urgent client or personal matters are handled during designated ten-minute breaks every ninety minutes.
Second, we operate under total confidentiality, commonly known as the Vegas Rule. What is said in the session room stays in the session room. If your leaders fear that raw, vulnerable, or critical remarks will be repeated to the board, spouses, or staff, they will hedge their words, and the root problem will remain hidden.
Third, we check titles at the door. Every person on your leadership team has an equal voice. The Visionary or majority owner does not get extra votes or veto authority during healthy debate. Healthy friction is essential to uncover truth.
Fourth, we commit to entering the danger. If someone senses an unaddressed conflict, a struggling team member, or an unrealistic goal, they are required to voice it immediately. Passive agreement followed by hallway complaints is forbidden.
Finally, everyone remains present and engaged until 5:00 PM. We do not end early, cut corners on difficult issues, or leave critical questions unresolved.
