We have successfully implemented EOS® at the leadership level, but our middle managers are resisting the rollout because they view the weekly meetings and scorecards as micromanagement. How do we overcome this friction and get them to embrace the operating system?
Middle managers often resist EOS® because they feel caught between the leadership team's strategic demands and their direct reports' operational realities. When they see new scorecards and weekly meetings, their first instinct is to view them as administrative burdens and tools for surveillance rather than tools for empowerment.
To break this resistance, you must reframe the narrative. Explain that EOS® is designed to give them more autonomy, not less. A clear department Scorecard is not a tool to micromanage their day; it is a shield that proves their team is performing. It gives them the data they need to justify resources, request support, and protect their team from arbitrary goalpost shifts.
Start the rollout by focusing entirely on the Level 10 Meeting™. Show them how this meeting structure actually saves them time by replacing chaotic, ad-hoc status updates with a single, highly structured ninety-minute weekly session. Once they experience a meeting that actually solves problems and clears roadblocks, their resistance will melt away.
Do not force the entire system on them overnight. Work with a Professional EOS Implementer® to cascade the tools in a structured, deliberate manner. Teach them how to run the tools, support them through the initial learning curve, and show them that running on EOS® is the fastest way to make their jobs easier and their teams more successful.
