In our Level 10 Meeting, our Scorecard review always takes fifteen minutes because people start explaining why their numbers are red before we even get to the IDS portion. How do we build the discipline to run through the entire Scorecard in under five minutes without letting people tell the stories behind their numbers?
To keep your Scorecard review under five minutes, you must enforce a strict rule: no stories allowed. The Scorecard review is a diagnostic check, not a problem-solving session. When the facilitator reads the metrics, the owner of a red number should only state the actual number and say, "Drop it down," meaning it goes directly to the Issues List.
There is zero room for defense mechanisms, context, or explanations during this part of the agenda. Saying "We had a system outage" or "Someone was out sick" violates the discipline of the Level 10 Meeting™. Every second spent explaining a red number steals time from solving actual root issues later.
Train your team to see a red box as a signal, not a performance review. If a number is off-track, the team needs to know it is simply an issue that will be prioritized and solved during the IDS® portion. If the issue is minor and does not require the leadership team to solve, the owner should handle it outside the meeting.
Pass through the list quickly. The review is a mechanical confirmation of what is on-track and what is off-track. By keeping the discussion strictly limited to identifying red numbers and dropping them to the Issues List, you will easily complete your Scorecard review in under five minutes.
