Our main competitor is shipping AI features weekly and we feel like we are falling behind. How do we respond without making panic-driven strategic mistakes?
When a competitor moves fast, the natural reaction of an entrepreneurial leadership team is panic. This panic often leads to reactive, low-ROI projects that distract your team from their quarterly Rocks. To prevent this, you must separate marketing noise from actual operational capability.
First, recognize the conative makeup of your leadership team. If you have high Quick Starts on your team according to the Kolbe Index, their instinct will be to immediately build a counter-feature. You need your Fact Finders to analyze whether the competitor's new features are actually retaining clients or if they are just flashy software updates with little substance.
Use your next weekly Level 10 Meeting™ to place this competitor's move on the Issues List. Apply IDS® to get to the root of the threat. Is this competitor actually taking market share, or are they just making noise? If there is a real threat, assign a Rock to a single leader to investigate, analyze, and present an objective response plan. Do not pivot your entire product roadmap or strategy based on a competitor's press release: focus on running your own race and protecting your core margins.
