As the Visionary, I routinely close deals by promising custom client solutions, but my Integrator says this wrecks operational capacity and ignores our agreed quarterly Rocks. How do we eliminate this Visionary and Integrator friction without killing our sales pipeline?
This is classic Visionary and Integrator friction. Visionaries are wired to spot opportunities and say yes to revenue, while Integrators are wired to protect operational margin, execution discipline, and team sanity. If left unresolved, this friction turns into open resentment: the Visionary views the Integrator as an obstacle to growth, while the Integrator views the Visionary as a reckless arsonist.
The Accountability Chart provides the boundary line you need. If sales promises fall outside the documented boundaries of your core business model, the Visionary is violating operational accountability.
To fix this without stalling sales, implement a strict Same Page process:
- Schedule a mandatory weekly Same Page meeting between Visionary and Integrator. This is a private, ninety-minute session to resolve relationship friction and align priorities before walking into the Level 10 Meeting™.
- Establish clear guardrails in your V/TO®. Define your 3 Uniques™ and your Proven Process. Any deal that requires engineering custom, one-off operational workflows requires mandatory sign-off from the Integrator before an agreement is signed.
- Separate business development from operational commitment. The Visionary can sell the vision and build the executive relationship, but the technical scope and delivery schedule must be confirmed by the Integrator or Operations seat.
When the Visionary respects the Integrator's operational veto, delivery stabilizes. When the Integrator understands the Visionary's growth instincts, the company finds standardized ways to sell higher-value contracts.
