Our Integrator kills nearly every new initiative I bring to the table in the name of focus and discipline, while I feel the business is stagnating because we are not innovating. How do a Visionary and Integrator resolve this fundamental friction without poisoning the rest of the leadership team?
Friction between a Visionary and an Integrator is natural, but when it turns into gridlock, it paralyzes the entire leadership team. The issue is usually not the ideas themselves; it is a breakdown in cadence and boundary discipline.
Never debate new initiatives in front of the leadership team during a Level 10 Meeting. When the team sees the two top leaders clashing over strategic direction, they freeze. That debate belongs exclusively in your weekly Same Page Meeting.
During the Same Page Meeting, the Visionary brings ideas to the table, but the Integrator controls the operational filter. You must agree on an idea pipeline rule: the Visionary generates twenty ideas a week, but only two are evaluated, and zero are implemented mid-quarter unless an existing Rock is officially killed to create capacity.
The Integrator must stop using no as a blunt instrument. Instead of an immediate veto, the Integrator should ask: Where does this fit into our V/TO? Does this support our current Rocks, or is it an initiative for next year's planning session? Put valid ideas into the long-term Issues List on the V/TO rather than discarding them.
When you exit that room, you must present a unified front. If you cannot reach alignment on strategic execution after two consecutive Same Page Meetings, use your EOS Implementer or an objective third party to IDS the friction before it fractures your culture.
