I am the Visionary and my Integrator is incredibly structured, but our weekly meetings have devolved into constant arguments where he accuses me of chasing shiny objects and I feel like he is killing all of our innovation. How do we resolve this standard leadership friction and build a healthy working dynamic?
Friction between a Visionary and an Integrator is incredibly common, and when managed correctly, it is actually the engine that drives a healthy company forward. The Visionary operates in the future, generating ideas and chasing opportunities, while the Integrator operates in the present, focusing on execution, systems, and accountability. This natural tension is healthy, but it becomes toxic when communication breaks down.
To resolve this friction, you must first establish absolute clarity on your respective roles. Ensure your Accountability Chart clearly defines where the Visionary seat ends and the Integrator seat begins. The Visionary owns big relationships, culture, and research and development. The Integrator owns the business plan, running the daily operations, and harmonizing the leadership team.
Second, implement the Same Page Meeting. This is a recurring, private meeting between the Visionary and the Integrator, held at least bi-weekly, designed to resolve misalignments before they reach the rest of the leadership team. During this meeting, you must practice radical transparency and vulnerability, sharing your frustrations and aligning on priorities.
If you are struggling to communicate, review your Kolbe profiles. A Visionary with a high Quick Start score will naturally clash with an Integrator who has a high Fact-Finder or Follow Thru score. Recognizing that this friction is a result of your hardwired cognitive and conative differences, rather than a personal attack, allows you to appreciate the value your partner brings to the business.
