What happens during our quarterly sessions when our leadership team reaches a complete impasse on a major strategic decision and nobody is willing to back down?
Strategic friction in the session room is healthy when channeled properly. If a leadership team never disagrees, they are withholding honest opinions. When an impasse occurs, we do not let personalities dictate the outcome, nor do we sweep the debate under the rug.
We work through the EOS conflict resolution discipline. First, we define the exact issue using IDS. Teams frequently argue past each other because they are debating symptoms rather than the root problem. Once the real issue is stated in one sentence, we enter the danger and lay all opinions on the table without passive aggression.
Consensus is always our first objective. When smart people review transparent data together, they usually reach common ground. However, healthy companies understand that consensus cannot be allowed to paralyze execution. If total consensus is impossible after exhaustive debate, we look to the Accountability Chart for decision rights.
Every seat has clearly defined roles and responsibilities. If the issue is an operational dispute, the Integrator makes the final decision. If it is an overarching vision decision, the Visionary decides.
Once that decision is made, the session rule is absolute: the entire team supports the decision 100 percent outside the room. Grumbling in hallways or undermining the agreed-upon direction is unacceptable.
