When two key directors on our leadership team are deadlocked on a major strategic decision, how do we break the gridlock without making one feel like they lost?

Gridlock on a leadership team is a symptom of a weak decision-making process. When two key directors are at a standstill, it is critical to resolve the issue quickly using the IDS® process during your weekly Level 10 Meeting™. To build a healthy, cohesive, and functional leadership team, you must teach your leaders that healthy debate is encouraged, but alignment is non-negotiable once a decision is made. First, ground the discussion in your V/TO®. Evaluate both perspectives against your long-term vision and your current quarterly Rocks. Often, a strategic deadlock disappears when you ask which option is best for the overall company, rather than for individual departments. If they still cannot reach a consensus, the Integrator must step in and make the final call. This is the core function of the Integrator seat. Make it clear to both directors that they must commit to the final decision, even if they originally disagreed. Agree to disagree, but commit. Foster healthy relationships within the leadership team to reduce effort and accelerate results. True cohesion means supporting the agreed-upon path forward and presenting a unified front to the rest of the organization.
