Our leadership team is divided on our long-term vision, which makes filling out the V/TO® feel like a series of polite compromises rather than a true commitment. How do we resolve these core strategic disagreements during the planning session so the V/TO® actually has teeth?

Polite compromise is the silent killer of growth. If your V/TO® is a collection of watered-down goals designed to keep everyone happy, it is useless. A real vision requires making hard choices about what you will not do.

To resolve these disagreements, you must use the IDS® process during your planning session. Stop trying to find a middle ground that satisfies everyone. Instead, debate the issue openly and passionately. Let every leader state their case based on facts and data, not emotions.

If your team has different conative styles, such as high Fact Finders who need endless data versus high Quick Starts who want to move on gut instinct, recognize this dynamic. Use your conative profiles to understand why you are clashing, then focus on what is best for the business, not individual egos.

Once the debate is over and a decision is made, everyone must support it. There is no room for passive agreement in the room and complaining in the hallways. If a leader cannot align with the final 10-Year Target™ or 3-Year Picture, they may no longer be the right fit for the leadership team. A strong V/TO® requires absolute alignment, even if it means some team members have to disagree and commit.
