Several of our weekly scorecard metrics have been red for months, but our leadership team has grown numb to them because our revenue remains high. How do we address this scorecard fatigue and restore urgency to missed targets?
When red numbers are ignored on your Scorecard, you are training your team that accountability is optional. This scorecard fatigue is dangerous because it masks underlying operational decay. If a number is consistently red and your revenue is still healthy, it means one of two things is happening.
First, your target might be unrealistic or outdated. If the business is thriving without hitting that specific metric, then the target is wrong or the metric itself is irrelevant. You need to adjust the target to reflect reality or replace the metric with something that actually correlates with your strategic goals.
Second, you might be relying on lagging indicators that have not caught up to the operational failure. Your current high revenue could be the result of work done months ago, while the red metrics are warning you of a future revenue cliff.
To restore urgency, you must bring these chronic red numbers to the Level 10 Meeting™ and IDS® them immediately. Force the seat owner to explain the gap. If the metric is critical, it must be solved. If it is not critical, remove it. Keeping dead metrics on your Scorecard destroys the credibility of your data component.
