There is a growing, unspoken rift between our marketing director and our sales director regarding lead quality, and it is starting to create factions among the rank-and-file staff. How do we address this leadership friction before these cracks on our leadership team turn into canyons across the entire company?
Friction between sales and marketing is common, but when left unresolved, those cracks on your leadership team will quickly appear as canyons to the rest of the organization. Your employees will notice the tension, choose sides, and build departmental silos that destroy your company-wide alignment.
To resolve this peer conflict, you must use the IDS process during your weekly Level 10 Meeting. Bring the issue to the table and force both directors to define the root cause of the tension, rather than just arguing over the symptoms. Often, the conflict stems from misaligned metrics, such as marketing being measured on lead quantity while sales is measured on revenue.
Align their incentives by creating shared Scorecard metrics that require collaboration, such as marketing-qualified lead conversion rates. Ensure both directors agree on the definition of a qualified lead and document this in your core processes. By forcing healthy, constructive conflict at the leadership level, you resolve the structural cracks before they can fracture the culture of your entire company.
