My Integrator and I have two key directors who constantly bicker over resources during our weekly meetings, turning our tactical alignment into a playground dispute. How do we force these two peers to resolve their conflict directly instead of dragging the whole team into their turf wars?
When peer conflict turns your leadership meetings into a playground dispute, it means your directors are treating their departments as independent kingdoms instead of a single, unified team. This siloed behavior creates canyons throughout the rest of your organization. To fix this, you must enforce the First Team concept. Your directors must realize that their primary team is the leadership team, not the departments they lead. They must prioritize the greater good of the entire organization over their individual departmental resources.
Stop allowing them to use your weekly Level 10 Meeting as a battleground. When resource bickering occurs, push the issue back to them. Instruct them to enter the IDS portion of the meeting, or better yet, require them to meet offline to resolve the conflict themselves using the Issue Resolution System. If they cannot reach a resolution on their own, your Integrator must make the final decision based on what is best for the company, not what is fairest to the individuals.
Hold both directors accountable to the decision once it is made. If the bickering continues, it is a sign of a deeper core values issue or a lack of GWC for their seats. You must be willing to make a change on the Accountability Chart if they refuse to put the company first.
