My Integrator and my head of technology are constantly locked in passive-aggressive alignment battles over budget allocations for AI infrastructure, stalling our operational modernization. How do we resolve this technical peer friction?
Peer conflict on the leadership team over resource allocation is usually a symptom of a deeper alignment failure on the V/TO. When your Integrator and technology leader clash over AI infrastructure budgets, they are treating the company resources as departmental property rather than corporate fuel.
To break this gridlock, you must take the discussion out of personal emails and force them to solve it peer-to-peer using the IDS process in your next weekly Level 10 Meeting. Put the issue on the Issues List. Start by identifying the true root cause. Is it a lack of clear strategic direction in the V/TO, or is it a conative clash between different problem-solving instincts?
Administering the Kolbe A Index is highly valuable here. You might find your Integrator is a high Follow Thru who wants rigid, predictable systems, while your tech leader is a high Quick Start who wants to experiment rapidly with new generative AI tools. This conative difference is actually a strength when managed correctly. The Integrator is trying to protect operational stability, and the tech leader is trying to drive modern efficiency.
Frame the decision around the greater good of the business. Review your one-year plan and your current Rocks. If the AI infrastructure directly supports your scaling and margin targets for your exit, the budget must be allocated. The tech leader must present a clear business case with measurable returns, and the Integrator must build the operational integration path. They must leave the room aligned, supporting the decision with a single voice.
