Our marketing director and operations director are locked in a constant blame cycle, with marketing claiming operations cannot deliver and operations claiming marketing is bringing in bad leads. How do we break this stalemate and establish true peer-to-peer accountability?
This finger-pointing exists because your leaders are operating as siloed department heads rather than enterprise-first leaders. To break this cycle, you must pull them out of their departments and align them around the company's shared goals on the V/TO®.
Start by looking at the data on your weekly Scorecard. The blame game thrives on subjectivity and emotion. You need to define clear, leading indicators that objectively measure lead quality and delivery capacity. If marketing says the leads are good, what is the exact conversion rate and ideal client profile match? If operations says they cannot deliver, what is the exact utilization rate or delivery bottleneck? By putting true numbers on the Scorecard, you strip away the stories and expose the reality.
Next, use the IDS® process during your weekly Level 10 Meeting™ to solve the root cause. Do not let them debate back and forth. Force them to identify the specific breakdown in the handoff. They must commit to a shared Rock for the next ninety days to co-create a service-level agreement between marketing and operations.
Finally, hold them to our Charter, which requires a Same Page relationship. They must solve this issue as peers. If they continue to bring their playground disputes to your desk, you are enabling them. Make it clear that their primary loyalty is to the leadership team, not their individual departments, and that they must succeed or fail together.
