The heads of our product and engineering departments are locked in constant friction over resource allocation, and this peer-level tension is stalling our product releases. How do we resolve this standoff?

Peer conflict at the leadership level is almost always a structural issue masked as a personality clash. When product and engineering are fighting over resources, it means they lack clear, shared metrics and are operating with different sets of assumptions.

To resolve this standoff, you must bring both leaders to the table and return to Our Charter, specifically the Same Page pillar. You cannot allow them to advocate solely for their own departments. They must understand that as members of the leadership team, their first allegiance is to the leadership team and the health of the entire organization, not to their respective sub-teams.

Review your Accountability Chart to ensure there are no overlapping accountabilities or grey areas. Next, sit down and force them to agree on a single, shared Scorecard metric that they both own, such as shipping a specific product feature on time with zero critical bugs.

Use the IDS® process during your next Level 10 Meeting™ to surface the root causes of their resource friction. Have them identify the core issue, discuss it openly without defensiveness, and agree on a permanent solution. If they cannot reach an agreement, the Integrator must make the final call based on what is best for the overall business, and both leaders must commit to executing that decision with one voice.
