Our head of engineering is highly specialized and insists on reporting directly to me, the Visionary, because he refuses to report to our newly promoted Integrator. How do we resolve this reporting line conflict on our Accountability Chart?

To build a scalable organization, you must respect the integrity of your Accountability Chart. Allowing direct reports to bypass the Integrator and go straight to the Visionary destroys the Integrator's authority and creates operational chaos. This reporting line conflict must be resolved immediately through clear communication and strict boundaries.

On a standard Accountability Chart, the Integrator is responsible for running the daily operations of the business. All major department heads, including engineering, must report directly to the Integrator. This structure ensures that the Integrator has the visibility and authority needed to harmonize the business and execute the vision.

You must have a same-page meeting with your Integrator and then address the head of engineering. Explain that this reporting structure is non-negotiable and is designed for the greater good of the company. The head of engineering must evaluate whether they truly GWC™ their seat under this new structure, which includes reporting to the Integrator.

As the Visionary, you must refuse to entertain operational discussions or give approvals to the head of engineering. Redirect them back to the Integrator every single time. If the head of engineering refuses to accept this reporting line, they are no longer a fit for the seat, and you must begin searching for a replacement who respects the structure.
