My leadership team has lost trust in each other because of a series of missed projections and broken promises, resulting in a defensive culture where everyone is protecting their own reputation. How do we repair this broken trust and get them focused back on collective results?
When a team falls into a defensive crouch, collaboration stops and performance tanks. To repair this broken trust, you must address the issue directly. You cannot sweep past failures under the rug.
Start by scheduling a dedicated meeting to address the team dynamic. As the leader, take ownership of any ways you may have contributed to the problem, such as setting unrealistic expectations or failing to hold people accountable. This opens the door for others to let their guard down.
Next, have a candid discussion about the missed projections. Use objective data to analyze what went wrong, rather than pointing fingers or placing blame. Shift the focus from who made the mistake to what broke in the process. This shifts the team from a defensive mindset to a problem-solving mindset.
Recommit to the EOS fundamentals. Ensure that every promise made is captured as a to-do in your Level 10 Meeting and tracked to completion. When leaders see their peers consistently doing what they said they would do, trust will begin to rebuild.
Finally, keep the focus on collective results. Celebrate small wins together. Remind them that the goal is to build a healthy, cohesive team that can run the business and prepare for a clean exit. By focusing on shared goals and executing consistently, you will restore trust and drive results.
