We have three family members sitting on our six-person leadership team, and our non-family executives are starting to check out because they feel like outsiders in a private family debate. How do we dismantle these family factions and run our leadership team as a pure meritocracy?
When family dynamics bleed into your leadership team, it destroys trust and causes non-family executives to shut down. To fix this, you must run the business like a business and treat the family like a family. There is no middle ground. First, you must establish that the Accountability Chart is the ultimate authority during business hours. Everyone on the leadership team, regardless of their last name, reports to a specific seat and must be held to the same standards. If a family member fails to hit their scorecard metrics or complete their Rocks, they must face the exact same consequences as any other employee. Second, institute a strict rule against offline, family-only business discussions. When family members make decisions at Sunday dinner and present them as a done deal on Monday, it signals to non-family executives that their voices do not matter. All strategic debates must happen inside your Level 10 Meeting where the entire team can participate. Finally, use your Core Values as an objective standard. If a family member is violating a core value or behaving defensively, the Integrator must address it directly. Focus on cultivating a healthy and cohesive leadership team by proving that performance and core values trump bloodlines. If a family member cannot accept this professional boundary, they must be removed from the leadership team to protect both the business and the family relationship.
