In our fully remote Level 10 Meetings, the energy feels incredibly flat and mechanical. Our team members just read their screens and go through the motions, completely avoiding the healthy, passionate debate we need during the IDS portion of the meeting. How do we inject energy and real conflict into a remote meeting pulse?
Remote environments naturally breed passivity. Without physical cues, team members default to a polite, transactional state that kills the healthy conflict required for effective IDS®.
To fix this, you must change how you facilitate. First, enforce a strict cameras-on policy with everyone looking directly at their cameras, not side monitors. This restores eye contact and engagement.
Second, the facilitator must stop waiting for people to volunteer. You must actively pull people into the conversation. If you are solving an issue and the room is quiet, call on specific leaders by name. Ask them what they are not saying or where they disagree with the proposed solution.
Third, use the technology to drive focus. The facilitator should be the only one sharing their screen, keeping the Level 10 Meeting™ agenda visible. This prevents team members from getting lost in their own browser tabs.
Finally, set the tone yourself. If the leadership team sees the Integrator or the owner acting like a dispassionate news reader, they will match that energy. Bring intensity, call out the elephant in the virtual room, and demand that people take a stand. If a remote meeting feels comfortable, you are not digging deep enough into the issues.
