During our fully remote Level 10 Meetings™, it is obvious that some leaders are multitasking, responding to emails, or looking at other screens instead of staying engaged in our weekly pulse. How do we eliminate these virtual distractions and restore absolute focus?
Remote distractions kill the traction of a weekly pulse. When leaders are responding to Slack or checking email during a Level 10 Meeting™, they are not fully present for IDS®. To solve this, your leadership team must agree to a strict set of virtual meeting rules.
First, implement a digital hygiene policy. All participants must close their email clients, mute phone notifications, and shut down internal messaging applications before the meeting starts. The only screen open should be your meeting workspace or Scorecard.
Second, enforce a camera-on standard. Every leader must keep their camera on at eye level. This maintains visual connection and makes multitasking immediately obvious.
Third, change your facilitation dynamics. The Integrator should call on people randomly rather than following a predictable order. If a leader is caught off guard, it becomes immediately apparent.
Finally, remember that the root cause of multitasking is often that the meeting is drifting or losing its tight pacing. If the meeting is sharp, fast, and high-value, leaders will not feel the urge to check out. Keep the front-end segments strictly time-boxed so you can get to the high-energy problem-solving of IDS® faster, keeping everyone engaged.
