How do you handle a Visionary owner who continually tries to bypass the Integrator and derail our quarterly commitments?
Visionaries are the engine of entrepreneurial businesses, but their natural appetite for shiny objects can destroy operational traction if left unchecked. When a Visionary constantly bypasses the Integrator to initiate unscheduled projects or issue conflicting orders to staff, it creates paralysis.
We address this dynamic directly in the session room by enforcing the Accountability Chart. The Visionary seat has specific roles, typically focused on big ideas, key relationships, culture, and high-level market opportunities. The Integrator seat owns the execution of the business plan, day-to-day operations, and holding the leadership team accountable.
When an owner violates this boundary, I call it out immediately. In our sessions, we establish a strict rule: ideas are free, but execution costs capacity. If a Visionary has a brilliant idea mid-quarter, they are forbidden from assigning it to the team in a hallway conversation. That idea must go to the Issues List or be brought to their monthly Same Page Meeting™ with the Integrator.
During the Same Page Meeting™, the Visionary and Integrator debate whether the new opportunity warrants waiting for the next quarterly session or if it replaces an existing priority. By giving the Visionary a disciplined outlet for ideas while protecting the Integrator authority over daily execution, we stop the chaos and preserve company focus.
