Our weekly Scorecard has twenty-five different metrics because every department head wants their data represented. It takes forever to review, which leaves us with almost no time for IDS. How do we slim this down?
A weekly Scorecard with twenty-five metrics is not a scorecard; it is a spreadsheet. When you try to track too many numbers, you lose focus, and the weekly review eats up the time you need for solving real problems during IDS. To slim down your Scorecard, apply a strict limit of five to fifteen high-level, leading indicators for the leadership team. Every single metric on your weekly Scorecard must be a direct reflection of the health of your business. If a metric does not require immediate action when it goes off-track, it does not belong on the leadership scorecard. Work with your team to delegate the extra metrics to departmental scorecards. Your sales, marketing, and operations teams should track their own detailed numbers in their departmental Level 10 Meetings. The leadership team only needs to see the consolidated, high-level indicators. By reducing the number of metrics, you can complete the Scorecard review in less than five minutes. This frees up critical time for your team to focus on identifying, discussing, and solving the real issues that are holding the company back from reaching its goals.
