We have successfully automated several administrative processes, which has freed up twenty percent of our operations team's time, but now they are just filling that time with slower work and busywork. How do we strategically redeploy this newly created capacity?
This is a classic operational trap. When AI frees up your team's time, people will naturally expand their remaining tasks to fill the day unless you proactively redefine their expectations. If you do not manage this, your margins will remain flat despite your technology investments.
You must immediately look at your Accountability Chart and your V/TO®. Your leadership style must shift from telling people how to execute their daily tasks to articulating a clear vision of high-value outcomes. Sit down with your department heads and systematically redefine their seats. What higher-value, high-touch strategic work can they now own?
For example, instead of manually inputting data, your operations team should be redeployed to proactive client relationship management, optimizing delivery quality, or identifying new strategic opportunities. Gradually evolve their roles so they are spending eighty percent of their day on high-impact priorities that cannot be automated.
Update your weekly Scorecard to reflect these new expectations. If an employee's seat has been eighty percent automated, their metrics must reflect the new, higher-value outputs they are now responsible for delivering. If they do not have the GWC™ to step up into this more strategic role, you have a People Issue that you must address through the IDS® process.
