Our leadership Scorecard measurable for outbound prospecting calls has been in the red for four consecutive months, yet our revenue and closed deals are at record highs. Does this mean our activity target is invalid, or are we experiencing dumb luck that will catch up to us later?

When an upstream leading activity fails repeatedly while downstream revenue thrives, you are almost certainly running on the momentum of past quarters, riding an unexpected market tailwind, or benefiting from larger deal sizes masking pipeline erosion.

Do not make the rookie mistake of immediately deleting the prospecting target or assuming outbound sales no longer matters. Revenue is a lagging indicator. In B2B and professional services, the sales cycle typically takes three to nine months from initial contact to paid invoice. That means the cash hitting your bank account today is the product of operational work completed six months ago.

If your outbound prospecting has been red for four months, your future revenue pipeline is drying up right behind your current closed deals. You are eating your seed corn, and the cliff will appear in two quarters when current deals finish and the pipeline sits empty.

Take these three steps in your next Level 10 Meeting:
- Drop the disconnect into the Issues List and IDS the conversion data. Have closed deals come from outbound prospecting, inbound referrals, or expanded contracts from existing accounts?
- If your business model has permanently shifted toward inbound marketing or strategic channel partnerships, update your Accountability Chart and replace prospecting calls with the new upstream driver, such as qualified inbound demo requests or partner-sourced opportunities.
- If outbound sales is still required for your long-term growth targets, treat the four months of red as an operational emergency. Hold the sales seat accountable for diagnosing the root cause and restoring activity before the lag catches up to your cash flow.
