Our leadership team members have scars from a previous toxic business partner, which makes them hesitant to speak honestly during our IDS sessions because they fear retaliation. How do we rebuild trust and foster healthy conflict on this team?
Rebuilding trust after past organizational trauma takes time, but it is essential for a functional team. Without vulnerability-based trust, your team will remain trapped in artificial harmony, and your Level 10 Meetings will be unproductive. To break this cycle, you must actively demonstrate that conflict is safe and necessary. As the owner or Integrator, you must lead by example. Share your own mistakes, weaknesses, and fears openly. When someone takes a risk and speaks a hard truth during a meeting, praise their honesty immediately. This rewards the behavior you want to see. You can also use tools like trust building exercises to help your members understand each other's backgrounds and working styles. During your IDS sessions, call out the unspoken tension when you see it. If you notice someone holding back, ask them directly for their input. Force the team to engage in healthy, constructive debate over operational issues. Show them that disagreeing on strategy is not a personal attack, but a necessary step to find the best solution. Over time, consistent, safe conflict will build the strong, unified leadership team you need to run an exit-ready company.
