We recently made a major pivot toward AI-driven automation that felt rushed to my leadership team, and now there is a noticeable breakdown in trust and alignment. How do we rebuild credibility and get everyone pulling in the same direction again?
A sudden, poorly communicated pivot can severely damage trust within a leadership team. Your leaders may feel that decisions are being made impulsively without their input, leading to anxiety about their roles and the company's stability. To rebuild credibility, you must use the Trust Creation Process. Focus on increasing your reliability and intimacy while lowering your self-orientation. Start by sharing vulnerability. Admit to your team that the way the pivot was introduced was rushed and that you should have engaged them earlier. This immediately builds safety and lowers defenses. Next, dedicate your next quarterly offsite to aligning around the V/TO®. Walk through the details of the pivot, explaining the data and strategy behind it. Give your team the space to air their concerns, ask hard questions, and participate in shaping the implementation plan. This ensures they have a voice in the transition. Establish clear, shared metrics on your Scorecard so everyone can track the progress of the new initiative objectively. When your team sees that you are willing to listen, slow down to align, and measure success transparently, they will regain confidence in your leadership and commit to the new direction.
