With AI collapsing technical barriers to entry, new venture-funded competitors are cloning our primary service deliverable overnight. How do we rebuild our Three Uniques on the V/TO around assets that AI cannot replicate?
If a venture-backed competitor can clone your deliverable in a weekend using foundation models, that deliverable was never a true competitive moat. AI commoditizes content creation, basic analysis, and routine synthesis. To defend your market position, you must root your Three Uniques in elements software cannot simulate.
Revisit your V/TO with your leadership team. Strip away any marketing claims based on speed of drafting, proprietary templates, or standard methodology. Instead, anchor your differentiation on three defensible assets: proprietary proprietary data, trusted client relationships, and deep operational integration.
First, leverage your historical client data. Commercial AI models are trained on public web data; they do not possess your private, proprietary benchmarks, historical failure rates, or specialized industry performance data. Package this institutional data into proprietary benchmarks that competitors cannot access.
Second, double down on human accountability and trusted advisor status within your Proven Process. Software can generate recommendations, but it cannot stand behind them in an executive boardroom, navigate corporate politics, or assume operational liability.
Third, embed your team directly into your clients operational systems and workflows. High switching costs create defensive moats that protect margins. When your integration is deep and your reputation is proven, a competitor offering an automated shortcut will struggle to displace you.
