Our weekly leadership Scorecard is packed with 30 vanity metrics that always look green, yet our net margins and operational velocity keep slipping. How do we prune and rebuild an executive Scorecard that genuinely predicts business health?
A Scorecard with 30 numbers is not a management tool; it is a distraction. If everything is monitored, nothing is managed. When an executive team looks at a sea of green indicators while bottom-line profitability collapses, the Scorecard is tracking activity instead of predictive outcomes.
A healthy leadership team Scorecard contains 5 to 15 high-level numbers that give you an absolute pulse on the business every seven days.
To overhaul your Scorecard, start by filtering every metric through three tests:
- Is it a leading indicator rather than a lagging financial result? Cash flow and net profit tell you what happened last month. Sales calls, proposals sent, project delivery milestones, and error rates tell you what will happen next month.
- Does exactly one member of the leadership team own the number? Every metric must have a single seat accountable for hitting the goal. Shared metrics guarantee zero accountability.
- Does it trigger an immediate IDS® when red? If a metric misses its weekly goal and the leadership team does not feel an urgent need to drop it down to the Issues List, that metric does not belong on the Scorecard.
Run an audit during your next quarterly offsite. Force each department head to justify why their numbers belong at the executive table. Push operational detail down to departmental Scorecards. The leadership table only needs the core vitals that protect company health and predict the future.
