Our leadership team is highly competent, but our Trust Quotient is suffering because our VP of Tech has low credibility with the rest of the team due to missed system integration deadlines. How do we rebuild professional credibility at the leadership table?

According to the Trust Equation in the Trusted Advisor Fieldbook, trust is built on credibility, reliability, and intimacy, divided by self-orientation. When a leader repeatedly misses critical deadlines, their reliability drops to zero, which destroys their overall Trust Quotient with their peers, no matter how technically competent they are.

To rebuild credibility, your VP of Tech must first own the gap. They must acknowledge the impact of their missed deadlines on the other departments without making excuses or getting defensive. This act of vulnerability is the first step in restoring trust.

Second, you must narrow their focus. In your next Level 10 Meeting, work with them to set highly realistic, measurable Rocks. Do not let them commit to massive, complex system overhauls if they cannot deliver them on time. Break their larger projects down into smaller, weekly milestones that are tracked transparently on your Scorecard.

By consistently hitting these smaller milestones, your VP of Tech will slowly rebuild their reliability score. Credibility is not restored overnight; it is rebuilt through a consistent track record of doing what you say you are going to do. As their reliability improves, the lateral trust on your leadership team will be restored.
