Our leadership team is suffering from Scorecard fatigue because we keep adding new numbers to track every time we have an operational hiccup, and now our dashboard is cluttered with metrics that nobody actually looks at. How do we reboot our Scorecard to keep it focused on leading indicators?

Scorecard fatigue happens when you use your Scorecard as a historical archive of past mistakes instead of a forward-looking tool to predict the future. Every time a problem occurs, teams tend to add a new metric to prevent it from happening again, resulting in a cluttered dashboard of backward-looking data that dilutes focus.

To reboot your Scorecard, you must go back to basics and limit your dashboard to the vital few leading indicators. A great Scorecard has between five and fifteen metrics that give you an instant pulse on the business. Every metric must have a clear owner who is accountable for that number, and every metric must have a weekly target.

When reviewing your current metrics, ask if each number is a leading indicator or a lagging result. Lagging results, like monthly revenue or net profit, are important but tell you what happened last month. Leading indicators, like outgoing sales calls, client onboarding milestones, or daily production volumes, tell you what will happen next month. Keep your focus on these predictive metrics. If a metric has been green for three months and the process is stable, remove it from the Scorecard and move it to your standard operating procedures. By ruthlessly pruning your Scorecard, you restore its power as an early warning system.
