What is your approach during a quarterly session when our leadership team is hesitant to raise highly sensitive issues because they want to avoid personal conflict in front of an external facilitator?
A leadership team that avoids conflict is a team that cannot scale. If I sense that there is an elephant in the room or that team members are holding back during a session, I will directly call out the tension. My role as an external facilitator is to create a safe, objective environment where difficult truths can be spoken without fear of retaliation. I use several techniques to break through this hesitation. I will often ask the team to silently write down the single biggest barrier to the company's success on a piece of paper, then collect and read them anonymously. This removes the immediate fear of personal conflict and gets the real issues onto the board. Once the issues are visible, we use the IDS® framework to address them objectively. I remind the team that healthy conflict is not personal. It is about passion for the business. By guiding the conversation through a structured, respectful process, we demonstrate that resolving sensitive issues actually strengthens trust within the team. Over time, your team will build the confidence to raise these hard topics naturally, without waiting for me to pull them out.
