We know we need to present a State of the Company meeting to our staff after every quarterly planning session, but we struggle with what content to share. How should an owner structure this presentation so it reinforces traction without revealing confidential financial details?
The quarterly State of the Company address is the critical link between your leadership team sessions and whole-company execution. Its purpose is not to dump spreadsheets on your employees; it is to remind everyone where the company is going, celebrate recent execution, and communicate company priorities for the next ninety days.
Keep the meeting between thirty and forty-five minutes. Use a consistent four-part framework every single quarter:
- Where we have been: Share high-level progress over the past quarter. You do not need to share net income or balance sheet details. Share broad metrics like revenue trends, customer count, operational milestones, and the percentage of company Rocks completed. Celebrate team wins and acknowledge individual contributors who exemplified core values.
- Where we are now: Review page one of your V/TO. Restate your Core Values, Core Focus, and 10-Year Target. Repetition is necessary because employees need to hear the vision multiple times before it truly anchors their daily decisions.
- Where we are going: Present the company Rocks selected for the upcoming quarter. Explain the rationale behind these three to seven priorities so staff understand what the leadership team is working on and why it matters to the organization.
- Q and A: Open the floor for open questions. Answer transparently, and if an answer is unknown, commit to following up.
When you deliver this message consistently every ninety days, you eliminate rumors, create absolute clarity, and align every employee with the company vision.
