We are trying to prepare our business for a clean exit, but whenever we put an exit-readiness issue like due diligence preparation or tax restructuring on our weekly Level 10 Meeting agenda, it gets pushed to the bottom in favor of immediate sales or customer service issues. How do we protect these enterprise value items during IDS?
When preparing your business for a clean exit, it is easy to let short-term, daily operational fires crowd out long-term enterprise value issues. If due diligence preparation, process documentation, or tax restructuring tasks are consistently pushed to the bottom of your weekly issues list, you are putting your future exit at risk.
To protect these critical transition items, you must actively prioritize them during the IDS® portion of your Level 10 Meeting™. When you begin the IDS® section, do not simply solve the easiest or most urgent customer issues first. The leadership team must review the issues list and identify the top three most critical items for the business, regardless of whether they are operational or exit-related.
If exit-readiness issues are consistently ignored, you may need to dedicate a specific portion of your issues list to your transition strategy. Create a separate category on your list for Step by Step Exit, or SxSE, priorities. Ensure that at least one of your top three prioritized issues each week is focused on building transferability or closing a key value gap.
Additionally, remember that exit readiness is not a separate project; it is the ultimate stress test of your operations. Resolving a systemic operational bottleneck actually increases your company's valuation.
By forcing the team to treat transition priorities with the same urgency as operational issues, you build a company that is always ready for a clean, highly profitable sale on your own terms.
